We brought the land ‘Down Under’ to life at our Care Home in Maidstone, as our virtual Nellsar Cruise reached its final destination – Australia. We transformed our Home with themed decorations and immersive sensory props, including a striking display of Aboriginal-inspired art. Joy, Grace and Jimmy contributed to our backdrop by creating themed artwork, and of course Billy the cat joined us for some ‘Down Under’ photographs!
Our residents took part in an engaging trivia quiz and fact-finding session, learning about Australia’s fascinating history. We discussed Captain James Cook’s arrival at Botany Bay in 1770 aboard HMS Endeavour, and how many places across Australia were later named in his honour. Conversation also turned to the story of the ‘Ten Pound Poms’, who migrated to Australia after the Second World War in search of new opportunities and a brighter future in the sunshine.
Everyone showed great interest in learning about Aboriginal culture, traditions and art, and our resident Joy shared personal memories from her own visit to Australia.
It was a vibrant finale to our armchair adventures, which we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed.
