Poppy crafting and church service at Loose Valley Care Home

Poppy crafting

Our residents at Loose Valley Care Home love arts and craft activities, so in preparation for Remembrance Day, we created various designs of cut-out poppies. Using tissue paper, crepe paper and red card, we created a circle design, as well as a wreath with a wired circle.

Using green card for the poppy leaves and red glitter to sprinkle on top, we stuck the red poppies onto the card, before pulling the sides up and create a three dimensional flower. We placed these handmade decorations into the Remembrance corner of our conservatory, and in our residents rooms.

The Recreation and Well-Being Team at Loose Valley said,

“We took time to reflect on the theme of the art class and the sacrifice and service of our men, women and animals, such as the horses, dogs and pigeons, who served in WW1. We will be joining in on Sunday 12 November with a Remembrance Service, and Paula our Recreation and Well-Being Champion, will be dressed in army uniform for a wartime singalong in the afternoon. We will read the famous “Flanders Fields” poem and a have a chat about how the war affected the lives of of our residents.”

Church service

Loose Valley residents recently enjoyed the monthly in-house Church service from All Saints Church, where we celebrated Harvest Festival with hymns like “We Plough the Fields and Scatter”. Thank you very much to Paul Turner from All Saints, and to our volunteers Phil and Cathy who play the keyboard for our popular singalongs.

As this one was for Remembrance, all our residents wore their poppies with pride while we read a few psalms and stories from the bible. We also sang “ I vow to thee my country” with such power, because we all know that one very well.

The Recreation and Well-Being Team at Loose Valley commented,

“It’s always a great session, with musical instruments such as bells with ribbons and bicycle bells to ring, and lots of well-known songs to join in with. They volunteer their time and it’s so lovely of them to do this for us and our residents. We always look forward to them coming in.”
