Last week we brought our Loose Valley Care Home residents together with a memorable and enriching journey to the sights and sounds of South Africa on safari.
We were all transported to the landscapes of a savanna, with backdrops of African animals of every type and size. We played safari sounds on our iPad too – crickets, birds and whispers of the wilderness at dusk.
Our conservatory was adorned with striking colours, flags, backdrops, posters, cardboard animals and even cardboard safari jeeps, all lovingly made by our team member Paula. We immersed ourselves in the rich culture of the nation and our residents were presented with a cuddly keepsake of either a lion, giraffe, cheetah or elephant, handmade from felt.
South Africa sparked so many topics of discussion at our Home – from animals to the country’s political history.
And of course we couldn’t forget the delightful flavours of South Africa. We were treated to a traditional dish of Babootie, which combined a curried lamb casserole with an egg-based topping, served with mixed vegetables. We also enjoyed a chocolate fountain and fresh fruit kebabs, drizzled in chocolate.
Our residents all took turns with our fun props and photo opportunities with the backdrops, having a laugh and chatting about the safari sounds being played. Our resident Joy has been on a South African tour years ago and said how wonderful it was and such a great experience. Billy, our Home cat, got transported to the savanna too, dressed as a cheetah of course!
What a brilliant virtual safari!
