Our residents at Loose Valley Care Home recently enjoyed a heartwarming and sensory-stimulating session with the Red Box Library. Using a special ‘Sharpen Your Senses’ box of cards, the group explored memories connected to the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste.
Nostalgic moments came when discussing scents; our ladies and gents fondly remembered the smell of freshly baked bread, laundry on the line, and cut grass. Some stronger smells brought different memories — the sharp scent of Vicks VapoRub, or diesel fuel which reminded our resident Grace of tractors on the farm.
Touch was another sense that sparked conversation. Residents talked about textures they loved, like soft velvet, warm wool, and even the feel of denim. Lillian shared that she was never a fan of corduroy. A fun wooden game helped everyone explore textures by matching pieces of fabric hidden in blocks; some were smooth, some rough, all interesting to feel and compare.
Music can also play a part in reminiscence such as nature sounds and old favourite tunes that can stir past memories.
These sensory sessions not only bring joy and laughter but also encourage storytelling, connection, and memory-sharing amongst our residents. They’re a lovely reminder of how our senses are deeply tied to our most cherished experiences.
