Phylis celebrates her birthday in style at Loose Valley Care Home

Our lovely resident Phylis turned 90 on Wednesday 22 April, here at Loose Valley Care Home.

As we are in lockdown, Phylis had said “forget my birthday”, so we said to her that there was no way we were going to do that! We would be celebrating for sure!

We arranged for her family to stay outside our conservatory, with Phylis inside as this is as close as we can get. In contact with her son, we arranged for him to drop off a cake and some banners and balloons for us to decorate the conservatory and her room.

Our Recreation and Well-Being Champion Paula put her arts and crafts skills to good use and created a lovely sign for her on white canvas, complete with sparkles! She also made an A4 poster about her ‘quarantined’ birthday which she and her family found amusing!

We also picked some red peony flowers, and popped them in a vase to decorate a corner of the conservatory; when she came through she was amazed that we had gone to so much trouble for her. It was such a pleasure to do for her special day.

Phylis talked through WhatsApp to her two boys David and Roy and their wives Tonia and Judy who had come to visit.

And to top off the celebrations, Kevin Walsh also spoke to Phylis over WhatsApp with a celebratory message just for her and he sang ‘Happy birthday’ live to her, which she was over the moon with!

All our staff gathered to sing a happy 90th birthday to her – one to remember!

Phylis said she’d had a lovely day of birthday surprises and enjoyed being out in the garden in the afternoon for a chat and a laugh.

After the party, Paula received a beautiful handmade thank you card from Phylis’s son for all that she’d done to make her birthday so special. She commented; “Such a wonderful touch and I feel so thankful and proud.”
