Loose Valley Care Home residents journey down the river Medway

A group of four of our Loose Valley Care Home residents enjoyed a wonderful blue-sky trip aboard the Kingfisher on Friday 13 September.

The Kingfisher is a lovely purpose-built boat which offers trips on the river Medway, all run by volunteers.

At a leisurely pace we cruised down stream through some of the most beautiful countryside, with the skipper highlighting points of interest to us along the way. Cruising at three knots, we entered a lock at Teston and our team member Paula helped with opening and closing the locks with the crew to let the water out and drain the lock to be the same level as the river below.

We passed underneath Teston Bridge, which is one of the oldest pack horse bridges in the country, and went down stream admiring the moored boats and choosing which one we wanted!

It was so picturesque and quiet – a beautiful warm, sunny day and perfect conditions for our adventure! Doug, Trevor, Jeanette and June loved chatting and admiring the views along the journey, and remarked how quiet the boat was as it’s solar powered and electric.

Our residents spotted some kingfishers, swans, ducks and geese and were able to feed the ducks and swans with food purchased at the shop especially for wildlife on the river.

As we approached East Farleigh Bridge we moored up and unpacked our picnic lunch to enjoy with a nice cuppa.

What a lovely day together!
