We had fun celebrating Ireland on Monday 17 March for St Patrick’s Day with our residents here at Loose Valley Care Home.
We played traditional Irish music, including Irish jig tunes and our ladies and gents loved singing along to the Irish pub songs. With backdrops of a rainbow and a pot of gold, shamrocks and flags, green was definitely the colour of the day! We donned leprechaun hats and a green wig and Billy our cat dressed up too.
Our team members tested everyone’s knowledge on all things Irish and dived into the history of Ireland and culture. Of course there was Guinness to enjoy and for our afternoon tea we served Kimberly biscuits and shamrock shaped shortbread with Irish latte – this being the first day of our Nutrition and Hydration Week celebrations too.
Our resident Trevor told us stories of his trips to Ireland, visiting the shipyard where they built the titanic. He worked on testing submarines and did sea trials to make sure they worked correctly, ensuring the design was robust and performed critical tests so the vessel was perfect to go into service. He would be working under the sea off the coast of Ireland and Scotland for weeks at a time, and never got claustrophobic! He also sang us a song, and told us that when the submarine returned it was given a real welcome, with people lined up on the dock who saluted and took off their hats to cheer. He said it was emotional.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!
